Days 8 and 9 are combined due to Day 9 being a 'rest' day. Our travels begin in Maggie Valley, NC where we have just spent the last two days. We get an early start and head out towards Charleston, South Carolina – it's all freeway today. We try to beat the heat by starting early.
The ride to Charleston is pretty much a straight shot down the freeway. Approximately 340 driving miles. We started as early as we could in the morning anticipating a hot day, getting as much riding in while it was still cool. After an hour into the drive the temperatures reach the mid to high 80s. Before we reach Columbia we were already into the low to mid 90s. The temps peaked out at 99 degrees! With full riding gear, this is HOT.
The traffic on the freeway was the heaviest I've ever seen. Many times they slowed to a stop just due to heavy traffic.
After arriving in Charleston we stopped at the visitor's center where at least we knew we could take a break in the air conditioning. Here we contacted the owners of the AirBnb where we are staying the next two days to let them know we were close to arrival.
This was our first experience with an Airbnb
accommodation, and it could not have turned out any better. .We stayed on Daniel Island near Charleston. Here are a few photos of our accomodations.
It was a room above the garage.
Nice park area across the street.
Be careful while walking!
In the late afternoon we decided to go downtown Charleston for something to eat. We dined at Hank's Seafood Restaurant. Best seafood we had on the trip.
Some photos of downtown Charleston.
The next day we went for a Fort Sumter ferry boat tour in Charleston Harbor. The Civil War all started here.
On the ferry – selfie.
Very small island and fort.
In the evening we had a special dinner with our friends Gary and Penny Randall.
